Cancellation of events at the TUM-GS

©TUM

Dear doctoral students,

In the past few days, the new corona virus (SARS-CoV-2) has spread further in Germany. Against this background, yesterday and the day before, new decisions of the Ministry and the TUM Board of Management were communicated. For this reason, we are contacting you today to inform you about the specific measures at TUM that also affect the events offered by the TUM Graduate School.

Effects on events organized by the TUM Graduate School

What happens to events organized by the TUM Graduate School?

In order to limit the spread of the Corona virus as far as possible, the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts has announced that teaching should be discontinued with immediate effect - until further notice until the beginning of the semester on April 19, 2020.

For the TUM Graduate School, this means that face-to-face events for doctoral candidates are canceled. In addition to the transferable skills courses, this also applies to the kick-off seminars in the above-mentioned period.

Will events be offered again at a later point in time?

The TUM Graduate School will try to offer replacement dates for the kick-off seminars and, if necessary, transferable skills courses. However, as further developments regarding restrictions due to the Corona virus are currently not foreseeable and the availability of rooms, trainers etc. has to be clarified, we cannot provide any more precise information at the moment. We will contact doctoral candidates who are currently affected by the cancellations of events and inform them whether and – if so in what form – alternative offers will be possible.

Will course fees that have been transferred already be reimbursed?

Course fees already transferred will be reimbursed. Doctoral candidates who have registered for a course that now has been canceled will be informed of the procedure in a separate email.

Which impact do the current restrictions have on doctoral exams?

The examination process is severely restricted. All internal university exams are generally canceled. Under certain circumstances, doctoral examinations can be held after consultation with the participants and in consultation with HR6. If you have any questions on an already scheduled doctoral exam in the time frame given above, please contact your respective degree-awarding institution.

What to do if the current precautionary measures cause significant disadvantages?

If you experience significant disadvantages due to the cancellation of (compulsory) events or exams, e.g. if employment contracts cannot be started or visas cannot be extended, please contact the organizing TUM unit to discuss how to proceed.

Further questions

If you have any questions regarding events and services at the TUM Graduate School, please contact us. We ask, however, for your understanding that due to the high volume of inquiries, processing may be delayed.

General information about the corona virus and individual behavioral instructions

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the German public health authority monitoring the latest developments, publishes regular updates and recommendations, including general hygiene recommendations but also information on stays in risk areas. We strongly recommend to keep yourself informed and follow these recommendations: https://www.rki.de/DE/Content/InfAZ/N/Neuartiges_Coronavirus/nCoV.html. Suspicion and contact cases are to be reported internally to your supervisor or doctoral supervisor. General information from TUM on the subject can be found here: https://www.tum.de/die-tum/aktuelles/coronavirus/.

The situation is developing dynamically and we will continue to monitor developments and recommendations closely. If further precautionary measures need to be taken that have an impact on doctoral procedures at TUM or if significant changes arise, we reserve the right to contact the members of the TUM Graduate School again by email.

Best wishes,

the team of the TUM Graduate School
