The Society for Genetics awards the 3000 € Elisabeth Gateff Prize for outstanding doctoral theses once a year.

Interested scientists with outstanding doctoral theses can apply up to one year after completing their doctorate or be proposed by a third party. Either the applicant or the proposer must be a member of the Society for Genetics. The thesis, which may be written in German or English, must be located in a field of genetics and for the most part must be done in Germany or by a German doctoral student abroad. The submitted works will be judged by a jury consisting of board and advisory board members of the Society for Genetics. The award ceremony takes place at the annual meeting of the Society for Genetics at which the award winner will present the doctoral thesis in a lecture.
