Second Orientation Day
Networking and Information for New Graduate Students
From October 19-21, 2011, the HELENA Orientation Days took place for the second time. Participants had the chance to familiarize themselves with the Center’s research and mission, to receive training in tools for successful doctoral work, to get acquainted with their fellow graduate students and to meet other members of HELENA and Helmholtz Zentrum München.
“We are pleased to welcome you as new graduate students,” said Christian Langebartels, head of Program Planning and Management (PPM). “The Orientation Days shall assist you in your transition to HELENA.” He introduced the graduate students to the mission of Helmholtz Zentrum München and its research program. Following his introductory speech, Monika Beer presented aspects of the Graduate School including the thesis committee, the thematic fields and the scientific education and training program.
The graduate students also had the chance to meet contact persons, and an Interactive Introduction Round provided a good way to get acquainted with their fellow students. They also learned more about the campus with its core facilities and important technologies and about the many different nationalities represented at HELENA. Another group planned a social event – a film evening and a christmas party.
In the evening, there was a guided tour of the famous Allianz Arena, where the day was concluded with a dinner. Günther Wess, the Center’s CEO, took the chance to join the graduate students and talk with them personally.
During the Orientation Days, five workshops were offered to provide training in key competencies and to present important tools for successful doctoral work:
- Project Management Fundamentals for Graduate Students by Braune and Becker (in English). More...
- Coping With the Challenges of a Doctoral Thesis by Tress and Tress (in English). More...
- 360 Degree Management by Rob Thompson (in English). More...
- The Dissertation as Project by Huber Klingenberger (in German). More...
- Effective Communication by Manola Kraus (in German). More...
At the conclusion of the Orientation Days, the graduate students received their certificates. “We experienced three days of interesting activities,” said one student, speaking for many others who shared the same view. “And we also received information and guidance on key aspects of graduate student life.”
